FAQ

Questions people ask

Can't find yours? Ask.

Is it raw?

It’s unpasteurized, which is the word on the label. Most grocery-store honey is heated so it stays runny on the shelf; ours isn’t. “Raw” doesn’t have a set legal meaning in Canada, so we stick to the term that does.

Why has my honey gone solid?

Unpasteurized honey crystallizes over time. It’s natural and it hasn’t gone bad. To make it runny again, take the lid off and stand the jar or pail in warm (not boiling) water for 15 to 20 minutes (longer for a pail), stirring now and then. Or leave it: plenty of people like it better thick.

How should I store it?

Lid on, at room temperature, out of direct sun. There’s no need to refrigerate it; the cold just makes it crystallize faster. Use a dry spoon so no water gets in, and it will keep for a very long time.

Can babies have honey?

No. Health Canada advises against giving any honey to babies under 12 months old because of the risk of infant botulism. That goes for all honey, including ours.

Why is this jar a different colour from my last one?

The colour and flavour depend on what the bees were feeding on and when the honey came off. Batches vary, sometimes a lot. That’s one reason it comes in clear glass.

Does honey help with allergies?

We’d love to say yes, but the evidence isn’t there, so we don’t claim it. If you’re allergic to pollen or bee products, check with your doctor before eating unpasteurized honey.

Where do you deliver?

Anywhere in Toronto with a postal code starting with M. Delivery is $5, or free on orders over $40. We don’t ship outside Toronto yet; that comes once we’ve found packaging that gets glass across the country in one piece. See shipping & returns for the details.

How does Monday pickup work?

Order online and choose pickup at checkout. We’ll email you where and when, and your order will be ready that Monday night. Paying ahead means it’s a quick hand-off.

When is the next batch?

The honey comes off in July, and new jars usually land in Toronto around October. When a size sells out, it stays sold out until then. Follow @prairiehoneyco to hear when it’s back.

Can my shop or café carry it?

Probably. There’s no formal wholesale list yet, but get in touch and tell us a bit about your place.
